Durham County Council unitary authority area X
These were part of the historic North Riding of Yorkshire before 1974 and not in the historic County Durham.
Despite a County Council title, this a unitary authority area which, while adding parts of Yorkshire, does not include Darlington, Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees* from the historic County Durham as these are three separate unitary authorities.
* Stockton-on-Tees unitary authority district also includes parts of Yorkshire south of the Tees.
Much of the Yorkshire part of this area is within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
