Funding boost to reopen airport in South Yorkshire September 9, 2025

Doncaster Sheffield Airport before its closureDoncaster Sheffield Airport at Finningley near Doncaster in South Yorkshire, looks set to reopen in 2026 after an announcement there of funding from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. But it could be 2028 before it is fully operational with commercial flights.

The approval of funding to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport and create an aviation and advanced manufacturing hub at Gateway East was made at a meeting at the airport of the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority Board on Tuesday September 9. The funding of nearly £160 million is on top of the £16m already committed by the Board, made up of the leaders of Barnsley and Rotherham metropolitan boroughs and Sheffield city council, the Mayor of Doncaster and the South Yorkshire Mayor who chairs it.

Announcing the decision, South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said: "Here, just 23 months after DSA was closed, we have taken the decision to commit £159.9 million to reopen it next year, with freight operations in 2027 and commercial flights and a fully operational airport by 2028.

"My ambition throughout this process has always been to not just reopen DSA but to make it a thriving regional airport, alongside a world-leading sustainable aviation and advanced manufacturing hub here at Gateway East. A plan for the long-term.

“The plan we have backed today is about more than holiday flights or passenger numbers, it’s a long-term commitment to drive jobs, growth and opportunities in sustainable aviation, advanced manufacturing, freight, and even the defence sector, here in South Yorkshire.”
