A lighter-look at the facts of Yorkshire life

Yorkshire on the slow track

While there are still many arguments for and against a High Speed 2 rail link to Yorkshire, one likely benefit is that it will easily allow Londoners to escape to Yorkshire for the day.

For a flying visit to Leeds, the day trip theory will hold good. For other places in Yorkshire though, many train services are still on the slow track.

Just for fun, we've randomly selected seven railway journeys across Yorkshire which could be beaten by a flying crow.

Crows are said to be able to fly at about 30 miles per hour and hold a reputation for flying in a straight line, so our crow could possibly get there first compared with these journeys (based on fastest weekday daytime train connections) and also on several others.

Here's our random selection and the speed the crow would have to fly to beat the train:

Rotherham - Huddersfield 15.7 mph
Leeds - Whitby 18.4 mph
Ilkley - Goole 21.2 mph
Barnsley - Harrogate 22.7 mph
Hull - Saltburn-by-the-Sea 22.8 mph
Halifax - Sheffield 23.9 mph
Dewsbury - Skipton 24.6 mph
Here are comparison figures for those who only have the urge to travel between London and other cities:

At present:

Leeds - London 85.2 mph
Sheffield - London 67.6 mph
Wakefield - London 91.1 mph
York - London 92.3 mph

With HS2:

Leeds - London 122 mph
Sheffield - London 107.1 mph
Wakefield - London 87 mph
York - London 124.2 mph
