Air travel

Airports in and around Yorkshire.

Yorkshire has two major airports, Leeds Bradford and Robin Hood, and there are others which are easy to reach just outside Yorkshire.

Allow plenty of time to reach the airport, particularly if travelling by car at peak times as there are sometimes congested sections of road along the way. Both the airports are near railways, but neither is connected to them. There are bus journeys connecting the airports to train stations in nearby towns and cities.

For general guidance, typical journey times are shown below based on the fastest routes when there are no delays. Additional time should be added to allow for any delays, particularly at peak commuter hours. Public transport times and journeys may differ on Sundays.

Leeds Bradford Airport

Leeds Bradford Airport is situated at Yeadon, about 7 miles north west of Leeds and about 6 miles north east of Bradford.

The airport originally opened as an aerodrome in 1931, but has since seen major expansion in its operations, now offering national, European, holiday destination and International flights from several operators and handling nearly 3.5m passengers a year.

There is no rail link to the airport, but regular bus services operate to Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate. The airport has premium, short, mid and long stay car parks all within 5 minutes walk or shuttle bus ride from the terminal. Prices for parking are shown on the airport website (see link below).

Durham Tees Valley Airport

Although outside Yorkshire, Durham Tees Valley Airport, previously known as Teesside International Airport, is just across the River Tees and the closest option for large areas of North Yorkshire, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland. The airport is 3 miles west of Yarm, the nearest Yorkshire town, and 5 miles east south east of Darlington in County Durham. The airport is 9 miles from Middlesbrough and 12 miles from Northallerton, North Yorkshire. The city of Durham is 19 miles distant. The small airport, a former RAF base, opened in 1964. Amsterdam and Aberdeen are the principal destinations. The airport has its own rail station called Tees-side Airport, on the Stockton to Darlington line. The station is half-a-mile from the terminal building and despite a regular service passing through it, it is one of Britain's least used stations as only one Sunday train in each direction actually stops there. Dinsdale station is a regular train stop, 2 miles away, where bus route 12 links to the airport. The airport has car parking close to the terminal with up to 3 hours free. Other tariffs are shown on the airport website (link below).
